AB de Villiers is the mixture of talent and natural ability and is at the top of the league. He can score fast in T20, can rotate the strike in the ODI, and can defend in tests. He caught the eye of selectors with his outstanding skill and was added to the national squad in 2004 as a 20-year-old. First, he debuted in a test in 2004 at home against England. South Africa lost the match on his debut, and ABD couldn’t meet the expectation on his first test match and scored 28 and 14 runs in both innings. He didn’t disappoint the selectors for a long time and scored a ton in the series. He didn’t waste too much time showing his capabilities to the world.

He has played from all the positions – top order to lower order. In 2005, South Africa toured the West Indies, and ABD was part of the team, and he smashed 450 runs in the series. After this, he struggled to reach 100 runs till 2007-08. He came back with a double ton against India at Ahmedabad and became the first South African player to hit a double century.

His ability to play big and convert a good start into a big score has made him a dangerous batter. In 2010, he played a marathon inning of 278 against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. It was the highest score by a South African batter, and one year later Hashim Amla broke his record by scoring 311*.

ABD continued growing as a player with time and also improved his batting technique. His defense skill and attacking skill improved with time and became the finest batsman of the modern era. He was great at the individual level, and the off-field incident has created some events for him. South Africa had to take an early exit from the 2011 World Cup, and de Villiers was named captain of the national team for white ball cricket. Due to the workload, he resigned from the T20 captaincy in 2013 but continued playing as a player.

As we have discussed, he can play attacking cricket and defensive cricket. His innings against Australia in 2012-13 told the world that he knows how to play test cricket when the situation demands. He faced 220 balls, scored 33 runs, and it was one of the famous draws. He and Faf du Plessis made a partnership and played all day for a draw. In the next test match, he scored 169 runs in 184 balls, and it shows the versatility of ABD.

He has done wicket-keeping for South Africa and leveled the record for most catches in a match. In 2012-13, he took 11 catches against Pakistan in the 2012-13 season. Former English wicket-keeper, Jack Russell holds the record of taking 11 catches, and ABD leveled the record. In the same match, he played an inning of unbeaten 103 runs in the second innings. He was the first wicket-keeper batsman to score centuries and claim 10 dismissals. Along with his wicket-keeping skill, his fielding skill was unmatchable, and was energetic on the field.

AB de Villiers was the face of modern-day cricket, and his achievements are quite impressive. ABD has a record of smashing the fastest century in ODI. Corey Anderson held the record, and ABD scored a century in 31 balls. The interesting fact is that he came to bat after 40 overs and scored 149 runs in just 44 balls. He broke multiple records and leveled the record of Rohit Sharma of smashing 16 sixes in an ODI.
