Indian Premier League: Background, Organization, Teams and More

The Indian Premier League (IPL), also known as the TATA IPL due to sponsorship, is a men's Twenty20 cricket league played by ten teams from seven Indian cities and three Indian states. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) established the league in 2007. It is typically held between the months of March and May each year and has an exclusive window in the ICC Future Tours Programme.

The IPL is the world's greatest cricket league, ranking sixth in average attendance among all sports leagues in 2014. The IPL became the world's first sporting event to be broadcast live on YouTube in 2010. According to Duff & Phelps, the IPL's brand value in 2019 was Rs 47,500 crore (US$5.9 billion). According to the BCCI, the 2015 IPL season made a significant contribution of 1,150 crores (US$140 million) to India's GDP. The 2020 IPL season established a huge viewership record with 31.57 million mean impressions and a 23% increase in overall consumption over the 2019 season.

The IPL tournament has lasted fifteen seasons. Gujarat Titans are the current IPL champions, having won the 2022 season.

Background

Zee Entertainment Enterprises funded the establishment of the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) did not recognise the ICL, and the BCCI was not happy with its committee members joining the ICL executive board. To discourage players from joining the ICL, the BCCI increased prize money in its own home tournaments and decided to impose lifetime bans on players who joined the ICL, which the board considered a rebel league.

Foundation

During the launch of IPL, Lalit Modi said that the IPL was created to attract a whole young generation of sports fans to stadiums across the country. The exciting Twenty20 format was designed to appeal to a young fan base that also encompasses women and children.

Following India's victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup, the BCCI announced the Indian Premier League, a franchise-based Twenty20 cricket competition, on September 13, 2007. The first season was supposed to begin in April 2008 in New Delhi, with a "high-profile ceremony." Lalit Modi, BCCI vice-president who spearheaded the IPL effort, detailed the tournament's format, prize money, franchise revenue system, and squad composition rules. It was also revealed that the IPL would be run by a seven-man governing council made up of former India players and BCCI officials and that the top two teams in the IPL would qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 the following year. Modi also stated that the IPL was not launched as a "knee-jerk reaction" to the ICL, but rather after two years of planning. The format of the league was similar to that of England Premier League and the NBA in the United States.

On January 24, 2008, an auction was held to determine the owners of the new league, with the overall base prices of the franchises priced around $400 million. The winning bidders were announced at the end of the auction, along with the cities where the teams would be based: Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mohali, and Mumbai.

Expansions and Terminations

Before the fourth season in 2011, two new franchises, Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joined the league on March 21, 2010. Sahara Adventure Sports Group paid $370 million for the Pune franchise, while Rendezvous Sports World paid $333.3 million for the Kochi franchise. One year later, on 11 November 2011, it was announced that the Kochi Tuskers Kerala side would be terminated due to a breach of the BCCI's terms of conditions.

The BCCI then announced on September 14, 2012, that the 2009 champions, the Deccan Chargers, would be terminated due to the team's inability to find new owners. The following month, on October 25th, an auction was held to determine who would own the replacement franchise, with Sun TV Network winning a bid for the Hyderabad franchise. Sunrisers Hyderabad would be the team's name.

The Pune Warriors India retreated from the IPL on May 21, 2013, due to financial disagreements with the BCCI. The BCCI officially terminated the franchise on October 26, 2013, due to the franchise failing to offer the required bank guarantee.

The two-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, and the opening ceremony season champions, Rajasthan Royals, were suspended for two seasons on June 14, 2015, following their involvement in a betting scandal and spot-fixing. Following an auction, it was revealed on December 8, 2015, that Pune and Rajkot would substitute Rajasthan and Chennai for two seasons. The Rising Pune Supergiant and the Gujarat Lions were the two teams.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 season's venue was relocated, and games were played in the United Arab Emirates. The BCCI announced in August 2021 that two new franchises might join the league beginning with the 2022 season. The franchises will also be based in two of the six cities shortlisted by the BCCI: Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Guwahati, Lucknow, Ranchi, and Dharamshala. RPSG Group and CVC Capital won bids for the two teams in a closed bidding process on October 25. RPSG paid Rs. 7,000 crores (US$880 million) for Lucknow, while CVC paid 5,200 crores (US$650 million) for Ahmedabad. The teams were later renamed the Lucknow Super Giants and the Gujarat Titans.

Organization

Tournament Format

With ten teams, the round-robin format was abandoned, and two virtual groups of five were introduced in the league phase, similar to the 2011 season. Following the league stage, the top four teams will advance to the playoffs. The first Qualifying match will pit the top two teams from the league phase against each other, with the winner heading directly to the IPL final and the loser receiving another chance to be selected for the IPL final by participating in the second Qualifying match. Meanwhile, the third and fourth place teams from the league phase encounter in an eliminator match, with the winner facing the loser from the first Qualifying match. The winner of the second Qualifying match advances to the final, where they will face the winner of the first Qualifying game in the IPL Final match, with the winner being awarded the title Indian Premier League champions.

Player Acquisition, Salaries and Squad Composition

A team can acquire players in one of three ways: through the annual player auction, through trading with other teams during trading windows, or by signing substitutions for unavailable players. Players enter the auction and set their starting price before being purchased by the franchise that auctions the highest. Unsold auction players have a chance to be signed as replacement signings. A player can only be traded in the trading windows with his permission, with the franchise needing to pay the difference between the old and new contracts, if any. If the new contract is worth more than the old one, the difference is split equally between the player and the team that is selling the player. In general, there are three trading windows: two before the auction and one after the auction but before the tournament begins. Outside of the trading windows or throughout the tournament, players cannot be traded, but substitutions can be signed prior to or during the tournament.

The following are some of the team composition rules (as of the 2020 season):

  • The squad must have between 18 and 25 players, with a maximum of 8 international players.
  • The total salary cap for the entire squad cannot exceed Rs 85 crore (US$11 million).
  • Under-19 players are only eligible if they have previously played first-class or List A cricket.
  • A team's playing eleven can include no more than four foreign players.

A player contract has a one-year term with the choice to extend it by either one or two years. Since the 2014 season, player contracts have been valued in Indian rupees, rather than US dollars. Overseas players can be paid in the currency of their preference at the exchange rate on the contract due date or the actual payment date. Prior to the 2014 season, Indian domestic players were not part of the player auction pool and could be enrolled by franchises at a distinct amount, with a set amount of 10 lakh (US$13,000) to 30 lakh (US$38,000) deducted from the franchise's salary purse for every signing. Franchise owners were outraged, claiming that richer franchises were "luring players with under-the-table deals," so the IPL made the decision to also include the homegrown players in the player auction.

According to a 2015 survey conducted by Sporting Intelligence and ESPN The Magazine, the typical IPL salary when pro-rated is US$4.33 million each year, ranking it second among all sports leagues worldwide. Because IPL players are only hired for the timeframe of the tournament (less than two months), weekly IPL wages are extrapolated pro rata to acquire an annual average salary, unlike other sports leagues where players are procured by a single team for the entire year.

Match Rules

As IPL games use television timeouts, there isn't any time limit for teams to finish their innings. However, if the umpires discover that teams are abusing this privilege, a penalty may be levied. During every innings, each team is provided a two-and-a-half-minute "strategic timeout"; one can be taken by the bowling team between the ends of the sixth and ninth overs, and one by the batting team between the ends of the thirteenth and sixteenth overs.

Since the 2018 season, all IPL matches use the Umpire Decision Review System, which gives evey team one chance per innings to review an on-field umpire's decision.

Prize Money

The total prize money for the 2019 IPL season was Rs. 50 crores (equivalent to 53 crores or US$6.6 million in 2020), with the winning team receiving Rs. 20 crores (equivalent to 21 crores or US$2.6 million in 2020). The 1st and 2nd runners-up received Rs. 12.5 crores (US$1.6 million) and Rs. 8.75 crores (US$1.1 million), respectively, with the 4th team getting the same amount. The other teams receive no financial reward. According to the IPL rules, half of the prize pool should be distributed among the players.

Title Sponsorship

DLF, India's largest real estate developer, was the title sponsor from 2008 to 2012, having secured the rights with a bid of 200 crore (US$25 million) for five seasons. After the 2012 season, PepsiCo paid Rs. 397 crore (US$50 million) for the title sponsorship rights for the next five seasons. However, the contract was terminated in October 2015, two years before it was due to expire, reportedly due to the two-season suspension of the Chennai and Rajasthan franchises from the league. The BCCI then sold the title sponsorship rights to Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo for Rs 200 crore (US$25 million) for the remaining two seasons of the contract.

Vivo won the rights for the next five seasons (2018-2022) in June 2017 with a winning bid of Rs. 2,199 crore (US$280 million), a deal that was more expensive than Barclays' Premier League title sponsorship contract between 2013 and 2016. Due to the ongoing military standoff between India and China at the Line of Actual Control in July 2020, Vivo withdrew from the title sponsorship rights on August 4, 2020.

It was also reported that the withdrawal was due to Vivo's market losses as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 situation, and that the company intended to return as title sponsors for the next three years. Dream11 has secured the title sponsorship for the 2020 IPL for 222 crore. Vivo returned as the 2021 IPL title sponsor, but pulled out again, and was replaced by the Tata Group for the next two seasons. According to InsideSport, the BCCI will receive 498 crore (US$62 million) in title sponsorship for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Due to the league's expansion beginning with the 2022 season, Vivo had previously agreed to pay a higher amount for the final two seasons of its sponsorship contract. According to InsideSport, the new agreement was structured so that Tata would pay Rs. 335 crore (US$42 million) per year while Vivo would cover the deficit of Rs. 163 crore (US$20 million) per season.

In 2022, Aramco acquired the rights to advertise on the Purple and Orange caps.

Brand Value

The tournament's value increased rapidly between 2016 and 2018, as evidenced by a series of price increases from one season to the next. Financial experts valued the IPL at $4.16 billion in 2016, but that figure increased to $5.3 billion in 2017, and $6.13 billion in 2018.According to a Duff & Phelps report, one of the key contributors in the rapid growth of the Indian Premier League's worth was the decision to sign of a new television deal with Star India Private Limited, which engrossed more viewers because the IPL was broadcasted to regional channels in eight different languages, as opposed to the previous deal, which saw transmissions restricted to sports networks with English language commentary. The report also stated that the game was still recovering from current controversy, stating, "This IPL season has grabbed the eyeballs for all the right reasons with a relatively controversy-free tournament, coupled with some scintillating on-field performances that have brought the spotlight back on the game."

According to yet another independent report undertaken by Brand Finance, a London-based company, the IPL's profit margin increased by 37% following the end of the 2017 Indian Premier League to an all-time high of $5.3 billion — having crossed the five billion milestone for the first time in a season. The company’s director stated that the Indian Premier League, currently in its 11th season, is here to stay. The league has provided financial benefits to players, franchisees, sponsors, and India overall, triggering a strong urge among a variety of stakeholders to value it adequately. To ensure sustained development, management and team shareholders must look for new ways to engage fans, clubs, and sponsors. To know more about IPL, follow CBTF Speed News!

Meanwhile, when he registered this unbeaten record, the Jamaican also posted the fastest century ever in the history of IPL.

In the queue of highest run scorers, Shikhar Dhawan comes in the 2nd position with 5981 runs, the top batters feature, Rohit Sharma, 5719 runs; Suresh Raina, 5528 runs. Suresh Raina holds the record for 102 catches in the IPL.

Chris Gayle is known to be the best batter in the IPL as he holds the record for the most number of sixes by a player in an innings along with having the tally of bagging maximum runs in 10 years of IPL history. He threatened the pacers of Pune Warriors in a group match of IPL 2013, crunching 17 sixes. His total tally in the league stands for maximum in 100 innings.

After the fall of Chris Gayle, when the team was in a do or die situation to qualify for IPL in 2016 playoffs against Gujarat Lions, AB De Villiers joined Virat Kohli on the pitch. The duo saved RCB with record-breaking 229 runs in 96 balls. Kohli got 109 run stands in 55 balls, de Villiers nailed 129 in 52 balls. Pakistan team was allowed to play in the inaugural season of IPL. From the Pak team, Sohail Tanvir got gold in 2008 when he earned his name in the IPL records book for dismissing the highest players in an innings. Sohail Tanvir had the figures 6/14 against Chennai Super Kings that still remains on the top.

There have been 17 hat tricks in 10 years of IPL and Amit Mishra owns the record for most hat tricks while achieving a feat three times in the year 2008, 2011, and 2013. Mishra picked 134 wickets and is the 2nd highest wicket-taker of the league with the bowling figures, 5/17.

Dwayne Bravo is considered to be the greatest bowler to take wickets in limited overs. Picking 174 wickets in 156 matches, he has been the highest wicket taker in IPL and 22/4 are his best figures.

Lasith Malinga and Mishra complete the top 3 with 170 and 166 wickets respectively and Bravo is the only bowler to claim 170+ wickets in IPL.

For scoring maximum runs in IPL, Royal Challengers Bangalore has the record for three times and the credit goes to the batting lineup, including Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli.

In the same match, when Chris Gayle threatened the teams in 2013 in Chinnaswamy stadium, RCB scored a total of 263 runs against Pune Warriors who lost the match by 130 runs.

Chennai Super Kings got the championship title twice and has the record of lowest total defended. There is no surprise in that as the side was captained by MS Dhoni against Kings XI Punjab. In the 2009 edition during the group match, CSK managed a reeling 116/9 by the end of first innings. Using his acumen, Dhoni led his team to win the match by 24 runs.

To win the matches in IPL, Mumbai Indians hold the record for their biggest victory in IPL 2017. During their championship run in the 10th edition of IPL, MI defeated Delhi Daredevils by 146 runs after bowling them for 66 runs in second innings.

Previously, RCB had this record which was recorded on the day when Kohli and De Villiers stood for 229 runs partnership record.
