Controversies In IPL Cricket Match Fixing

Cricket match fixing in IPL has always been in headlines. Match fixing and betting activities has led to either ban of teams playing in IPL as a punishment or suspension of players involved.

IPL tournaments began in the year 2008 and it’s been 13 years now and so many controversies have come up in all these years.

Stating a few controversies below:

  • There was a spot fixing case in IPL 2012 wherein an Indian news channel aired a sting operation accusing 5 players for spot fixing. After the news got flashed Rajiv Shukla, President Indian Premier League immediately suspended  the 5 uncapped players, these players were

T.P. Sundhra from Deccan Chargers

Mohnish Mishra from Pune Warriors

Amit Yadav and Shalabh Shrivastav from Kings XI Punjab

Abhinav Bali from Delhi Daredevils

Mohnish Mishra, a Pune Warriors India Player was caught admitting on the tape that franchises pay black money.

  • In the year 2013, again spot fixing rocked the IPL and this time some famous cricketers were caught as victims which shook the entire league members.

Indian cricketer Shreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested by Delhi Police on the charges of alleged spot fixing in 2013.

The scandal shook the IPL leading to a crackdown in betting activities in India and lost TV viewers in the next season.

In the same year, Mumbai Police arrested Vindu Dara Singh and Gurunath Meiyappan, son in law of Chennai Super Kings owner and former President N Shrinivasan for betting activities and having connections with bookies.

Later in 2015 Supreme Court of India suspended Rajasthan Royals for two years and neither of them participated in IPL 2016 and 2017.

  • IPL fixing then came to a standstill, but later in 2019, CBI booked seven suspected punters in connection with two separate cases related to IPL match fixing 2019 based on inputs from Pakistan. The country wide probe was led by the central agency carrying out searches in Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Jodhpur.

The CBI named Dileep Kumar, based in Rohini, Delhi, and Gurram Vasu and Gurram Satish based in Hyderabad in its first FIR as accused while Sajjan Singh, Prabhu Lal Meena, Ram Avtar and Amit Kumar Sharma, all from Rajasthan.

Fixers in IPL were never left, rather a strict punishment from authorities was imposed to combat such activities otherwise the country’s image is at stake.
