The Bangladesh Cricket Board is all set to return to separate white-ball and red-ball captains, moving away from the across-format captaincy structure currently followed by the board.

BCB sources confirmed that the directors will discuss the issue when the proposal is tabled at the scheduled board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (July 29.

Litton Das, the current T20I skipper, is the front-runner to lead the white-ball side as he is expected to take charge of the ODI team from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, subject to the approval of the board directors, while Nazmul Hossain will continue as Test captain.

Cricbuzz earlier reported that time is running out for Mehidy as ODI captain and, if sources are to be believed, the matter will be resolved in the board meeting, paving the way for having two captains respectively for the white-ball and red-ball formats.

Towhid Hridoy, who is currently Litton's deputy in T20Is, is expected to play the same role in ODIs as well. The board is considering Hridoy, the middle-order batter who captained Bangladesh in the recent T20I series against Zimbabwe and Australia, guiding his side to a 2-1 comeback series victory over Zimbabwe after losing the opening match, as a future leadership prospect.

According to sources, the board initially considered Shanto to take over the ODI captaincy that was taken away from him earlier but eventually preferred to back out of their position as they felt it is better to have separate white-ball and red-ball captains so that Shanto remains focused on leading the Test side while Litton plans with the white-ball cricketers.

Mehidy was appointed Bangladesh's ODI captain on June 12, 2025, replacing Shanto, and his tenure was extended by the BCB in April this year through to the 2027 ODI World Cup.

However, under Mehidy's leadership, Bangladesh failed to meet expectations in the 50-over format, particularly away from home, as they managed to earn only two wins out of the 13 ODIs that Mehidy led outside the country.

Mehidy's appointment marked the return of three different captains across the three international formats, with Shanto leading in Tests, Mehidy the ODIs and Litton the T20Is.

Bangladesh earlier had two captains after Najmul, who was leading across formats, decided to step down as T20I skipper. Later, the BCB decided to hand over the T20I captaincy to Litton and followed it by taking over the ODI captaincy from Najmul and handing it over to Mehidy, marking the return of three captains, an experiment that is likely to end.

Earlier, in 2022, Bangladesh had three captains when Shakib Al Hasan led the Test side, Tamim Iqbal captained the ODI team and Mahmudullah was in charge of the T20Is.
