BCB shifts focus on HP, Salahuddin likely to take over

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to refocus its development pathway, with plans to restructure the High Performance (HP) Unit to strengthen the player pipeline.

It is understood that the BCB is considering winding down the Bangladesh Tigers programme in favour of a unified HP structure. As part of the revamp, Bangladesh national team senior assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin is expected to replace David Hemp as HP head coach, with Tigers head coach Sohel Islam likely to assist him in the new setup.

Under the proposed structure, all cricketers above 23 and outside the national team will come under the HP Unit, overseen by its coaching staff. Players from Under-19 to Under-23 levels will be placed under a separate programme run by the BCB's Game Development wing.

"The Tigers setup will merge with HP. There will be nothing called Tigers because it creates a lot of confusion. Basically, what will happen is that Tigers and HP will merge to become a High Performance Unit. Everything except national team training will happen in the High Performance centre, as it happens elsewhere in the world," an official closely involved with the development told Cricbuzz.

"The problem here was that High Performance was High Performance until a certain time. But then there was a program by ACC where they launched an Under-23 program. So then it became an Under-23 program," he said.

"This left the players in between with nothing. That's why the Bangladesh Cricket Board started Tigers but if High Performance runs as High Performance then no committee named 'Tigers' is needed. And most likely the Under-23 program, from 19 to Under-23, will be under Game Development," he added.

It is also learnt that BCB president Tamim Iqbal has already held discussions with Salahuddin regarding the HP Unit. Sources indicate that the meeting, held last week, was productive and that the experienced coach could take charge sooner rather than later.

"We will design the HP program during May and then it might start in June," said an official, adding that Salahuddin is expected to be available during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, scheduled from May 2.

"Well, there won't be any HP program activities during that time. It'll be office work, structural activities. Our programme will start within the existing budget and structure, and then we'll start making amendments. Since the Premier League will be on then (during the home series against Pakistan) there won't be any HP work either," he added.
