Australia have named a 13-man squad for the two-Test series against Bangladesh in August, with the return of Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and captain Pat Cummins headlining the same.

The veteran bowling troika returning after their sporadic participation in the Ashes of the preceding summer gives the squad a familiar look. While Hazlewood missed the entirety of the Ashes after picking up an Achilles injury while recovering from a hamstring strain, Lyon underwent surgery after sustaining a hamstring injury in the third Test in Adelaide.

The Adelaide Test was also the only game that Cummins featured in as he marked his comeback from a lower back stress injury. Once Australia retained the Ashes, he did not feature in the last two Tests as a precautionary measure.

Hazlewood and Cummins were also ruled out of the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, but returned to action at different stages of the IPL. Lyon, on the other hand, has not featured in a competitive game since the Adelaide Test.

"The NSP [National Selection Panel] look forward to the return of Pat, Josh and Nathan," chairman of selectors George Bailey said. "They have worked extremely hard, individually and with the SSSM [Sport Science Sports Medicine] teams, over the past few months to return from their respective injuries."

Michael Neser, who starred with 15 wickets in three Ashes Tests, and Brendan Doggett have been left out following the return of the senior pacers. Both Neser and Doggett, as well as offspinner Todd Murphy have been training with the main squad and could come into the picture should Australia require reinforcements at any stage.

"While this is a 13-player squad, we have players prepared and available should any adjustments be required in the lead up to these matches," Bailey said.

"As previously stated, the volume of cricket and schedule across the next 12 months are likely to present further opportunities across all formats for many players."

Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland are the other pacers in the side outside all-rounders Cameron Green and Beau Webster, both of whom could feature in the XI following Travis Head's elevation to the opener's role and Usman Khawaja's retirement. Josh Inglis, the spare wicketkeeper in the squad, will also be vying for a spot in the middle-order.

Australia opted against making changes to the top-order with Jake Weatherald, who debuted in the Ashes and mustered only 201 runs, set to partner Head at the top. The under-fire Marnus Labuschagne has also been retained despite meagre returns in the Ashes where he averaged 28.78 for his 259 runs, having earlier been dropped from the XI during the tour of West Indies.

The two Tests, part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, will be played in Darwin (August 13-17) and Mackay (August 22-26). It marks the beginning of a long schedule that will see Australia play 14 Tests over an eight-month span, culminating in a tour of India and a one-off game against England to commemorate the format's 150th anniversary at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Australia currently lead the WTC standings with a PCT of 87.50, with seven wins and a loss from eight matches.
