Bangladesh's batting all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain said on Tuesday that he always believed that he can step up when it matters the most for the country.
Mosaddek repaid the faith of the selection panel with a match winning performance in the ODI series opener against Australia as he was recalled after a gap of four years for the first-two games of the series.
Mosaddek, who hit a breathtaking career-best unbeaten 86 off 70 balls inclusive of seven fours and three sixes, insisted he always had the faith in his abilities. "Honestly, yes, I believed it.
"And I think it's entirely up to management - who they use, when, and where. I feel that for those consistently performing in domestic cricket, if they can stay consistent, the door is open for everyone. Anyone who wants to play for the national team will definitely want to take that chance," he said.
Mosaddek admitted that he was frustrated after being over looked for years but added that he never gave up hope.
"Of course there was frustration. It wasn't an easy time for me at all. Many of you may have seen my struggle period, many may not have. Through all of that, I always tried to stay patient and keep doing my job. I kept telling myself that when an opportunity comes, I should be ready to take it well. Mashallah, Allah has given me far more than I even asked for," said Mosaddek adding that the recall did not surprise him.
The 30-year-old forced his way back into contention with impressive domestic performances, scoring 310 runs in six innings at an average of 77.50 and a strike rate of 129.17, including one century and two half-centuries. He also picked up 12 wickets in seven innings.
"It definitely lifted me (DPL performace). If you keep performing, that belief stays with you that an opportunity may come. And ultimately - whether you play for Abahani or anywhere in domestic cricket - everyone is trying to serve the country. That's the main goal, and I believe everyone feels that way. So yes, Premier League performances and everything else carries value," he said.
"Not really (surprised to get the call) considering the way I was playing in domestic cricket over the last few years. I had the belief that if I kept it up, the opportunity would come eventually," he said.
"Thinking about that now won't bring anything back for me. I never thought about it that way. I just tried to stay present - whenever my opportunity came, I wanted to be ready to take it. That's why I kept practicing and kept myself prepared," he said.
"Regret certainly lingers. I feel I never delivered to my full potential. I always look at my own shortcomings - and I still believe whatever happened was due to my own limitations. I'm trying to overcome those and deliver in the remaining matches ahead," he said.
Referring to the on-field brawl, Mosaddek said it wasn't anything serious between Josh Inglish and Nahid Rana. "Nothing much really happened. It was just a batter's frustration at getting out. It was a miscommunication, nothing more than that - nothing serious. I think what happens on the field should stay on the field," he noted.
Mosaddek said Bangladesh are eyeing thier maiden ODI series win against Australia now. "This is certainly a historic win. But I'd say there's a great opportunity ahead of us to win this series. If we stick to our process, it's absolutely possible, and I believe - starting with myself - all of us need to believe that, Inshallah," he concluded.
