Jayden Lennox claimed his maiden five-wicket haul, laying the foundation for New Zealand's five-wicket win over West Indies in the second ODI in Guyana, helping the visitors level the three-match series. Lennox's superb figures of 5 for 19, coupled with two wickets apiece from Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, saw New Zealand's spinners account for nine wickets as West Indies were bundled out for just 138. New Zealand took 32.4 overs to get past West Indies' total, with Tom Latham (37*) top-scoring for the visitors.
Asked to bat, West Indies got off to a good start thanks to John Campbell (43) and Ackeem Auguste (18), who put on a 63-run opening stand. However, once the ball got older and the spinners came on, the game's tone changed completely. Auguste was early into a shot and edged a Bracewell delivery to point while Campbell was late to an arm ball from Santner and was bowled for 43. Lennox then came along and knocked over Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford in quick succession, while Keacy Carty was bowled by Santner as West Indies slipped to 108 for 5.
New Zealand's spinners targeted the stumps, with six batters getting bowled and two given out LBW. Gudakesh Motie was the next to fall, again bowled by Lennox trying to punch a spinning delivery while Matthew Forde missed the line and was bowled looking to sweep. Amir Jangoo, who showed good application compared to the rest of the batters, was out for 24, trapped LBW attempting a sweep off Bracewell. Alzarri Joseph was run out while Vitel Lawes missed a sweep and was out leg-before to Lennox as West Indies' innings ended in 36 overs.
Will Young got New Zealand off to a steady start in the chase, playing crisp drives and striking five fours in his 31-ball 28. His outing ended when Joseph trapped him in front, and New Zealand lost another soon after as Mark Chapman was run out without scoring. Henry Nicholls, who had a sedate start, hit two fours in a Joseph over to get going. But Motie ended his stay as Nicholls top-edged a sweep.
New Zealand were 52 for 3 at this stage with Latham and Daryl Mitchell at the crease and the fourth wicket pair steadied the innings with a 42-run partnership. Mitchell capitalised on the boundary opportunities while the two batters ensured good strike rotation, taking New Zealand towards the target. The partnership ended when Mitchell was out stumped off Khary Pierre, who also bowled Dean Foxtrot for a duck. Latham and Bracewell then ensured no further hiccups, adding 45 for the sixth wicket to take New Zealand over the line in the 33rd over.
Brief scores: West Indies 138 in 36 overs (John Campbell 43; Jayden Lennox 5-19, Mitchell Santner 2-21) lost to New Zealand 141/5 in 32.4 overs (Tom Latham 37*, Will Young 28, Daryl Mitchell 28; Khary Pierre 2-33) by 5 wickets.
