Kotak rules out experimentation in Dutch clash with eye on future games

The format of the ongoing T20 World Cup is such that India have not only qualified for the Super 8s with three wins in as many games, but also have their venues and opponents decided before they could complete their games - with no additional points to carry into the next round.

There are ample reasons for the team to experiment in their inconsequential encounter against Netherlands, but Sitanshu Kotak, the batting coach of India, has revealed that they have no such plans. The reason being they have their eyes set on the possible future games at the venue - Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.

The most immediate among those would be the contest against South Africa, a team that has played all its three games of the group stage so far at this venue, and a team that's been on the rise with each passing game.

"Every match is important for us," Kotak explained. "On this ground, after this, the next match is on the 22nd (against South Africa). And the final can be here (too). So obviously, it is good for the players to get used to this condition.

"I don't think there'll be any experiments. But yes, looking at the wicket and conditions, we might try something different," he said, possibly suggesting the inclusion of an additional pacer instead of a spinner, since spinners across all teams have struggled in Ahmedabad's three games in this competition.

Kotak added that they are not taking the inconsequentiality of the contest into consideration. "Every game is important, your team wants to be in the same (winning) momentum. So for us, it is not a less pressure game or more pressure game. We played the last game as well with the same intent, we will play the next game with the same intent as well."

While there is an opening to rest players who may be carrying minor niggles and need some down-time ahead of the five possible games, one player who definitely needs a big game, would be Abhishek Sharma, the Indian all-rounder who is yet to score a run in the ongoing World Cup.

Kotak isn't too fussed with his lack of runs, and has backed Abhishek to come good soon despite multiple teams admitting to having planned excessively to counter the southpaw's early surge. "We unnecessarily don't over-analyse, because sometimes you only start making a lot of assumptions. So he is someone who has got his plan sorted and he follows the way he wants to, and obviously we discuss about the opposition, their bowling, their bowling strength, whatever they've been doing in the last few games they've played. All that is normal for everyone, not only for Abhishek."

He also heaped praise on how smoothly Ishan Kishan has made his transition back to international cricket. "He has always performed whenever he has played for India. And I think once he came back also, whatever I have spoken to him, he has always been a very confident player. I know him since Under-19 days, when he was with India A team. Before that, in 2016-17 he was in the IPL team (Gujarat Lions) where I worked.

"He has always had this strength, his nature. He's not someone who cares too much about things, so the T20 game needs that. He's very talented because if you see his innings, he'll play everywhere in the ground. He's someone who is very difficult to restrict if you don't get him out. So that's a great thing for the team. He's (been) in a positive mindset since he came. And obviously he speaks to all the support staff and (the) captain. Since he came he looks very comfortable.
