Matthew Mott has been appointed Sydney Sixers' BBL head coach on a two-year deal, with the four-time World Cup-winning coach switching from the club's women's program to lead the men's side ahead of BBL|16. Mott replaces James Hopes, who was initially appointed after Greg Shipperd's departure but left the role last month to take up a dual coaching position with Queensland and the Brisbane Heat.

The 52-year-old Mott had spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Sixers' men's side before taking charge of the WBBL team last summer, guiding them to the Challenger. The Sixers will announce a new WBBL head coach later this week.

The appointment marks another chapter in Mott's decorated coaching career spanning more than two decades. Most recently, he coached England's men's white-ball side between 2022 and 2024, leading Jos Buttler's side to the 2022 T20 World Cup title. Prior to that, he oversaw one of the most dominant eras in women's cricket as Australia's head coach from 2015 to 2022, winning two T20 World Cups, the 2022 ODI World Cup and four Ashes series, while also overseeing a world-record 26-match ODI winning streak.

Mott said he was delighted to continue his long association with the Sixers in a new role. "I've been part of the Sixers family for a long time, so to have the opportunity to step into the BBL Head Coach role is something I'm incredibly excited about," he said. "This is a club with a proud history and a winning culture, and I'm looking forward to building on the foundations that have been established over many seasons. Having worked closely with the men's program, I've seen first-hand the talent and potential within this playing group.

"While it's disappointing that I won't be able to continue as WBBL Head Coach, I'm incredibly grateful for my time with the women's program and wish Ash [Gardner], the players and support staff all the very best for WBBL|12," he added.

Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes said Mott's experience and familiarity with the club made him the ideal candidate to lead the men's program. "Matthew is one of the world's most respected and accomplished T20 coaches, with a proven track record of building successful teams," Haynes said.

"Since joining the Sixers, Matthew has made a significant impact across both our men's and women's programs, with his leadership, cricket knowledge and ability to build strong team cultures, making him an invaluable part of our organisation. With the potential for the BBL and WBBL windows to shift each season, we have appointed separate head coaches for each team to ensure continuity and long-term stability across both programs.

"While we considered Matthew's ability to lead both programs, we've taken a long-term view to ensure consistent and stable leadership across both teams," Haynes added. "The strength of the candidate we have appointed as WBBL Head Coach gave us confidence that this was the right move for both programs, and we look forward to announcing that news in the coming days."

Mott's appointment comes during a period of significant change at the Sixers, who will also have a new captain after Moises Henriques retired from Australia domestic cricket. Before establishing himself as one of the game's most successful coaches, Mott played 66 first-class matches for Queensland and Victoria, scoring 3723 runs.

He has also coached New South Wales, Glamorgan, worked with IPL franchises Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, and has also been part of Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket in 2025. He is currently coaching Manchester Super Giants Women in The Hundred while also serving as a T20 consultant with Lancashire.
