Sourav Ganguly appointed Delhi Capitals head coach

Sourav Ganguly has been appointed the new head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2027. The former India captain replaces Hemang Badani, who held the position for the last two seasons.

Ganguly has been associated with the Delhi Capitals franchise since 2019, when he joined as an advisor. Following his tenure as BCCI president, he was appointed Director of Cricket for both the men's and women's teams. More recently, he served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals, leading them to the SA20 final earlier this year.

“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL. Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years," Ganguly said. "I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me. We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team."

Ganguly will be tasked with guiding Delhi Capitals to their first IPL title. One of only two original franchises - Punjab Kings being the other - yet to win the competition, Delhi came closest in 2020 when they reached the final. They topped the table the following year but failed to progress to the final. They have not made the playoffs since that 2021 season and finished sixth last year under the Axar Patel-Hemang Badani combination.

Under the franchise's split ownership model, the JSW group will manage the Capitals for the next two years. JSW Sports founder Parth Jindal said he hoped Ganguly's appointment would help the side mount a stronger challenge for the title. "Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family. I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals.

"I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title. I cannot wait for all our players and staff to learn from Dada and am looking forward to seeing DC in action at the earliest.”

Ganguly's first task will be to finalise his support staff and plan the squad retentions before the November 15 deadline. The mini auction ahead of the 2027 season will be held in mid-December in Goa.
