Teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is likely to play in the DY Patil T20 tournament in Mumbai. The annual competition in Navi Mumbai attracts 16 teams every year, and this season the India Under-19 World Cup-winning star is set to represent one of the DY Patil sides. The organisers normally field two teams in the competition.
Sources close to Sooryavanshi and the tournament organisers have revealed to Cricbuzz that talks are underway with the player's team and the chances of the young prodigy featuring in the tournament are very high. Coming as it does ahead of the IPL season, the tournament, starting on February 23 this year, usually sees many international players take part.
Sooryavanshi, who smashed a record-breaking 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final against Afghanistan in South Africa recently, is currently in Talegaon, near Nagpur, where the Rajasthan Royals have a facility. On arrival from South Africa, the 14-year-old did not go home and instead began preparing for the IPL season.
"He is currently practising in Talegaon, where the Rajasthan Royals camp is underway. The camp will continue till February 21, after which Sooryavanshi will proceed to Patna and then to his hometown," informed a source close to him. In his town, a promotional event - where he is expected to be presented with a vehicle - is scheduled. It is apparently long overdue and after that, he may come to Mumbai for the DY Patil tournament.
The DY Patil tournament, held annually at the DY Patil Stadium, is one of the oldest T20 competitions in the country, having been started in 2003. The venue has been one of the hotspots of Indian and global cricket of late. It has hosted the final of the Women's World Cup, some of the warm-up games of the ongoing World Cup, and is in line to host a few IPL matches as well.
