We got out of same situation last year: Shafali Verma

For a brief moment on Wednesday, on the eve of the must-win clash against Bangladesh, Shafali Verma turned philosophical. One loss to South Africa - that big match marked in the tournament calendar - and the World Cup hopes are on a knife's edge for India.

But they have been there before - not necessarily Shafali, but most of the team; seven months ago trying to keep afloat the hopes of their World Cup campaign. And Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian skipper, has tried to retrace that emotion.

"Yesterday, in the huddle, Harman di told us that it's not like we've never been in this situation before," Shafali said, revealing the conversation. "We came into this same situation last year and got out of it. So I think a tough situation is one that has never come in your life before. We had accepted this situation in ODIs and we won. So we know that now we have to win these two matches. For that, what preparation will we need, how we will have to talk to each other as players.

"This time also we'll just go and see what we did at that time, the things we executed well, so each player will see that and we are all ready for that [challenge]."

One aspect of the team's routine that has noticeably altered since the loss to South Africa is how chirpy the players have become in training. On Tuesday, while they were involved in sort of a team-bonding exercise, on Wednesday, at the nets, they constantly kept egging each other on - whether it was the bowlers cheering their fellow pacers or the batter they were bowling to in the nets.

Not that the passing of compliments during net sessions is necessarily rare, it was the loudest the team has been in the nets through the course of this campaign. Whether it was simply Nandni Sharma's energy rubbing off on the rest remains uncertain.

However, to cheer each other up is as much a plan of India's campaign revival after the morale-sucking loss on Saturday. Shedding light into how the team plans to overcome the setback, Shafali added, "Whenever we have a bad day as a team, we know that every player's morale will be down. But the next day, we all know we have to come together, unite and motivate each other. So yesterday in the huddle, we just said: from hereon, everyone knows that both are crucial games. But we'll back each other, we'll give our best in these two days of preparation.

"We'll go day by day. Like today is our practice, so today we'll only think about practice; then we'll see tomorrow about the game, so it's just a day-by-day process, we think a lot about staying in the present. And everyone is very mature. Everyone has played a lot of cricket and has played in front of so many people. So I don't think they'll let that situation happen again in this World Cup. We'll just give our best in this World Cup."

In some ways, all that motivation serves well when the team is in control of its plans. Over the past three games, the middle order has witnessed a constant churn and the pace attack has taken in a new member in each of the games. The perfect combination is still uncertain, and the concerns of the long tail are yet to be addressed.

"You're playing the World Cup - anyone can get a chance," Shafali said, defending the constant chopping and changing of the side. "If you don't perform well, then of course you'll sit out. And we all know that whoever performs, will play."

The absence of healthy contributions from the senior batters - Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues - to go with the lack of wickets upfront with the ball - has all come to hamper India's campaign. The fixes required are too many. At a stage where in all likelihood, India need to win every game from hereon - while keeping Net Run Rate calculations in mind - a lot of areas seek improvement.

However, whether they will find their fix or not in the contest against Bangladesh, Shafali is sure about one thing - "We are all backing each other, whether someone is sitting out or someone is playing. We are all thinking that we have to win the match."
