You have to embrace the tough days: Rahane

KKR's woes continue to mount as they remain winless after their first six games. In Ahmedabad, skipper Ajinkya Rahane made the curious decision to bat first, citing that he wanted his batters to play with freedom. Whether driven by data or instinct, the call backfired.

"Yes, as a batting team, we were thinking about 200 on this wicket would have been challenging," said Rahane after the game.

"But let's not take away anything from Cameron Green. Fantastic innings, fantastic knock. You can lose wickets. But we reached 180 because of Cameron Green's effort," he added, lauding the Australian all-rounder for his 55-ball 79.

With time running out and hopes of a turnaround growing slimmer with each passing game, Rahane stressed on remaining positive and to embrace the tough days.

"You got to embrace those days, tough days as well. As a sportsman, keep your head up, keep trying your best each and every day. So, for us, it's all about just going out there, being positive, playing with freedom.

"Embrace these tough days as a team, as an individual. And every day is a new day, trying to get better, go out there. What we can do as a team is play with freedom, play to our potential and try to back each other, enjoy each other's success," he added.

Statistically, KKR have been the worst pace bowling unit this year with an economy rate north of 11 runs per over. Their attack has also noticeably lacked bite, particularly in the Powerplay. "The guys who are bowling in the Powerplay are inexperienced. That's the truth. That's the honest truth," assessed Rahane, bluntly.

He did, however, back them up and said that they are working really hard. "But they are still giving their best. They are trying their best to pick the wicket, which is not happening. But as I said, Anukul Roy, Karthik Tyagi, Vaibhav Arora, they are really trying their best. It wasn't easy in the Powerplay for spinners to bowl," he observed.

When asked why Green did not contribute with the ball, Rahane said that cramps were to blame. "We didn't have any other option to go to in the Powerplay. Cameron Green was struggling with his cramps. He was getting massive cramps, so he was struggling," he said.

Despite the perils and the position his team is in, Rahane reiterated the need to stay positive and in the moment.

"When you're losing matches, it's very easy to look down and just think of negative things. But I'm really proud of the unit. There is always hope. You always want to be positive rather than thinking about negatives. I always believe in that. Being positive each and every time. But as a unit, we just have to be in the moment rather than thinking far too ahead.

"Taking one game at a time and just trying to give our best," he said.

The Knight Riders have little time to regroup as they face the Rajasthan Royals at home in less than 48 hours.
