Bangladesh Premier League
Seven franchises compete in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), a professional Twenty20 cricket league. One of Bangladesh's three professional cricket leagues is the BPL. It ranks as the 6th most popular premier league worldwide. Each team plays the other twice during the league stage in the winter. The top four teams make it to the playoffs after the regular season, which consists of a single-elimination game, two qualification games, and a championship game between the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.
After the suspension of its predecessor league, the National Cricket League Twenty20 in 2009–2010, the Bangladesh Cricket Board created the Bangladesh Premier League in 2011. The inaugural season's matches were placed in Dhaka and Chittagong in February 2012. The Governing Council's chairman is in charge of the BPL.
Without the participation of franchises, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was supposed to organize the 2020 BPL. The decision was made during a meeting between BCB and franchise owners; nevertheless, BCB did not agree to all of the team owners' demands. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the BCB confirmed in October 2020 that there wouldn't be another competition in 2020.
The Franchises of Dhaka and the defending champion Comilla Victorians now share the distinction of being the most successful team.
History
The Bangladesh Cricket Board revealed a plan to replace the National Cricket Competition with a franchise-based league in response to the success of Twenty20 franchise leagues throughout the world, including the Indian Premier League. The board and Game on Sports Group signed a six-year, 350-crore agreement on January 18, 2012, to create a franchise tournament. The agreement granted the group sole management powers over the competition. Six franchises from Bangladesh's main cities were the league's first members. Thirteen businesses participated in the franchise auction, with six acquiring the rights to each club.
After the ICC included January and February in its ICC Future Tours Programme, the BCB announced the BPL calendar for the following three seasons in July 2022. Accordingly, the ninth season was planned to run from January 5 to February 16, 2023, the tenth season from January 6 to February 17, 2024, and the eleventh season from January 1 to February 11, 2025. Additionally, the board made the first-ever decision to sell the franchise rights for a term of three years.
League Organiser
The Bangladesh Premier League sees itself as an organization made up of and supported by its member teams on a business basis. The Bangladesh Cricket Board and the taking franchises split all penny made through televised rights, licensing deals, sponsorship, ticket sales, and other means. A Governing Council is in charge of running the league (GC). The Bangladesh Cricket Board, which is the GC's parent organization, chooses its members.
The league has seven franchises as of the 2018–19 season. In the round-robin phase of the competition, each team faces every other team twice, with the top four teams moving on to a round of playoff games. These result in the league champion being determined in the championship game.
The projected Meghna Division is represented by Comilla Victorians, whereas Mymensingh Division is the only division in the nation without a representative franchise in the Bangla Premier league.
