The first-ever U19 ICC women’s world cup takes place in South Africa, and it will start in January. The U19 men’s world cup has been taking place for a long time, but it is the first chance for women. The 16 teams will participate in the U19 women’s world cup cricket which will start on 14 January. In the world cup, 41 matches will take place, and after it, ICC women’s T20 World Cup will also take place in South Africa from 9 February.
Teams in U19 Women’s T20 World Cup
11 teams are full members of ICC and have gotten direct access to the world cup. The full members are India, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Zimbabwe. Five spots remain, and they will be filled through the other five regions. All the regions will have regional tournaments, and the topper of the tournament will get an entry into U19 ICC women’s world cup.
Other Five Teams Through Qualifiers
Since five spots are left, five teams will come from five different regions – Asia, Africa, Europe, EAP, and America. In the Asia region; Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand, Qatar, Malaysia, and UAE played the tournament, topped the table, and qualified for the world cup. In the Africa region; Mozambique, Nigeria, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Uganda played the tournament, and Rwanda topped the table and qualified for the world cup.
In Europe qualifiers; Netherlands and Scotland played the match, and Scotland qualified for the world cup. In the EAP qualifier; Indonesia and PNG played, and Indonesia entered the qualifiers. From the Americas region, the USA gained a ticket for the world cup.
UAE is the first team to qualify for the world cup for the 5 vacant places as they won the match by 6 wickets against Thailand in the final. In a 3-match series, Indonesia surprised PNG and qualified for the world cup. Scotland got the ticket after winning back-to-back matches against Scotland. Nine teams participated in the Africa qualifier for the world cup, and Rwanda won the final against Tanzania by six wickets and secured their place in the world cup.
Tournament Format
The 16 teams are divided into 4 groups, and each group will have 4 teams. In Group A; Australia, Sri Lanka, the USA, and Bangladesh are placed. The Kangaroo is the most experienced and strongest team as they have some players, who have played WBBL and domestic cricket. Australia will likely top the table. The Caribbean legendary player Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the coach of the USA, and others will not make the mistake of taking the USA lightly.
In Group B; Pakistan, England, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe are placed, and England is the strongest team among all and is a strong contender to win the women’s t20 world cup. Pakistan is no less than other teams, while Zimbabwe can also upset the other team. Rwanda has upset Ireland in a warm-up match, and its U19 team becomes the first team from Rwanda to present itself on a global stage.
In Group C; Ireland, New Zealand, Indonesia, and West Indies are placed, and New Zealand is the strongest and most experienced team that is a strong contender for the women’s t20 world cup. Indonesia has started its campaign with a win in the warm-up matches against Zimbabwe. Indonesia has reached this level for the first time, and wins have increased their expectations. West Indies are no lesser than other teams, and the Caribbean flavor is known for the boundaries. Ireland has also claimed their spot, and they have qualified as a full member of the ICC.
In Group D; South Africa, Scotland, India, and UAE are placed, and India and South Africa are the strongest teams in the group. Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh are part of the India team and played multiple matches. Shafali Verma is the captain of the U19 Indian world cup team. She got the experience of playing in the international circuit, WBBL, and will be looking to win the world cup. South Africa is another team that will make things difficult for other teams.
